Prior to 1742 only solid silver items were being manufactured in Britain until the process of fusing silver to copper was invented and the use of Old Sheffield Plate started to grow. For nearly a century top quality silver items were being crafted by hand out of sheets of fused silver plate. Just about anything previously made in solid silver was now made this way as, at that time, there was no law forcing manufacturers to mark Old Sheffield Plate items. This means it can be difficult to date Old Sheffield Plate silverware with a degree of precision. Such silver items are now commonly dated acording to their design to an accuracy of around ten years. The advent of electricity and other forms of industrial mechanisation eventually caused the decline of the Sheffield Plate industry as electroplating became ever more popular from the mid 19th Century.
